There is nothing better for me than holding that first cup of coffee of the day, between my hands, sipping slowly and receiving it’s warmth as it fills me up. It is a cup of happiness for me and there is something sacred about that first cup.

But more sacred than that first cup of coffee that makes me happy is Psalm 23:5, “my cup overflows”, where the psalmist is wanting me to know that it is not about a physical cup of happiness, its about my life being so filled by God that my cup doesn’t just get filled…it overflows with God’s presence as He generously pours into my life.

The overflow doesn’t mean that everything is easy now or I won’t have any problems, it means that my life is marked by God’s presence that is filling me, not just for me, but to pour out to others.

My cup overflows looks like God’s presence in my life is so full, so sufficient, that even in the hard places I have more than enough because I have Him and it spills out into how I live and love others.

That is my cup of happiness. Knowing that God is the one filling my sacred cup and doing the pouring into others, which means my posture is not one of hustling, striving or controlling, but one of receiving and trusting.

We have to receive before we can pour.

What would it look like to let God be the one who fills you to overflowing?
